On the cusp of fall

Hello fellow gardeners,

Fall is only weeks away at the Granville & 7th garden and with that comes the closing of the summer season. The mornings are starting to get cooler and sure enough the leaves will begin to transition into their fall colours.  September is the month to harvest and enjoy the last of your summer crops and squeeze in any remaining fall and winter planting.

Here is a quick run down of the garden update:

  • Water

  • Fall & Winter planting

  • Green waste bins

  • Harvest

WATER

Rain has been falling here and there but don’t let it fool you.  Keep up the watering!! Even though the season is starting to change, it's still dry out there and any extra water and/or a steady watering routine will boost your garden and provide you with the tastiest, healthiest and scrumptious veggies.

FALL & WINTER PLANTING

It’s still not too late to get planting for fall and winter.  There’s a small window left for planting if you want to maximize what you’re growing this year.  Here is a link to a chart showing you what you can plant and when.

GREEN WASTE BINS

I have noticed that some gardeners have been placing garbage in the greens waste bins like gloves, pots, plastic bags etc.  The green waste bins are only for plant clippings, weeds and other plant related waste.

Please take your garbage home with you.

HARVEST

Planting and growing your own food is satisfying, however, harvesting your vegetables is one of the greatest pleasures.  It feels obvious and silly to remind gardeners to pick and eat their food; there's nothing worse than watching vegetables and greens over ripen, wilt or rot because they've gone unpicked for weeks.  Get picking and fill your bellies with fresh veg!

Along with this, picking your veg when it’s ready and ripe for the eating will reduce the amount of theft and opportunity for it.
