Summer is only moments away

Hello fellow gardeners,

June has arrived Granville & 7th garden, and sure enough, the weather is primed to heat up and dry out.  By now, some gardeners have already harvested their first round veggies and I can see the end of spring is going to bring a lot more bounty for others.

Some Important things you need to know:

DEADLINES

Two important deadlines have now passed, the Registration Deadline (May 15th) and Garden Bed Use Deadline (May 31st).

If you haven’t registered and/or you haven’t begun growing, unfortunately your bed/s have now been allocated to another gardener.

GARDENING IN COVID-19

Please make yourself familiar with our new gardener rules guideline and best practices, if you haven’t already, as they are currently implemented within the garden. Read here: Community Garden Guidelines

GREEN WASTE BIN

Most of us have already weeded, cleared out our beds and planted this spring.  However, I've noticed that some gardeners, when pulling up old plants or weeds, have not been shaking out the soil attached to the roots.  It's best practice to try and keep as much soil as you can in your beds, so when you pull up an old plant, take a few more seconds to shake out most of the soil before taking it to the greens waste bin.

I have also been noticing quite a bit of garbage being left in the green waste bins.  Please be sure to take your garbage with you when you leave the garden, as there is no garbage to be left on site.

WATERING

As it begins to heat up in June, it's a good idea to plan on visiting the garden every 2 to 3 days to soak your soil.  Early morning watering is the best time of the day to water and second best (and perhaps more realistic) is to water during the cooler evening hours. Watering during the hottest midday hours can scald your leaves and fail to penetrate those deeper layers in the soil where you want your roots to dig.
