Sunny August at Broadway and Alma!

Hello fellow gardeners,

Happy August! It feels like summer is finally here and we are so excited to get to eat, cook and pickle the food we harvest!

Here are a couple of garden updates and opportunities for August.

MURAL UNVEILING AND BROADWAY AND ALMA

If you’ve been spending much time at the garden over the last few weeks you might have seen a new mural coming together right next door. In late august there will be a mural unveiling celebration in the garden that we would love for you to attend. This will be a great opportunity to share your thoughts and feedback about the new art mural. If you are unable to attend, feel free to share your feedback with us by email at grow@communitygardenbuilders.com

We will share more details about when this event will take place next week. We look forward to seeing you there!

WATER, WATER, WATER

Make sure that you are visiting the garden every 2-3 days so you can soak your bed thoroughly. The best time to do this is in the morning hours, which provides hydration for your plants during the hottest times of the day, reducing the prospects of powdery mildew and other funguses from spreading and taking hold of your plants. The second best is a deep watering in the evening hours. Watering constantly throughout this heat will increase your yields and keep your plants happy.

Seeds to Start in August

I know nobody wants to think about fall quite yet, but if you are starting to plan your fall garden, this blog post by West Coast Seeds is a great guide for what seeds to start in mid-august so that you can continue eating home-grown veggies into the fall.

VANCOUVER COMMUNITY FRIDGE PROJECT

We thought we would remind you of this fabulous initiative in case you have some extra food to spare…

The Vancouver Community Fridge Project aims to combat food insecurity and decrease food waste by encouraging our communities to take part in laterally-directed mutual aid, starting with providing free, safe, non-policed, accessible and nutritious foods through community fridges and pantries.

The Vancouver Community Fridge Project is a great opportunity to give back to the community by sharing some of the delicious fresh food that you grow with neighbours and community members. If you are interested in donating to the Community Fridge Project, check out their list of fridges and find a location that works for you!
