Hello Fellow Gardeners,
November has arrived at the 4th & MacDonald garden and a big fall milestone has already come and gone. With the brief cold snap in mid October where the mercury got as low as minus 3; the first frosts of fall came earlier than years previous.
The summer growing season was a big one this year, with gardeners growing so many different varieties of vegetables and flowers. I saw how much time, effort and care went into the garden this season and I want to thank all the gardeners for contributing to the good vibes during these tough times. Well done!!

WATER IS OFF
The water is now shut off at the garden and won’t be turned back on until spring 2021.
CLEANING OUT YOUR BEDS
With the frost starting to become more frequent, it’s important that you get to the garden and clear out your beds of any dead or dying plants. We require you to tidy your beds for winter and place any plants that you do not wish to overwinter in the green waste bins.
Please shake out the root ball as best as you can. I like to bang the stems against the bed with the root ball over the soil. It’s always good practice to keep as much soil in the bed as you can.
MULCHING YOUR BEDS
Autumn is a great time to collect leaves that have fallen and place them on your beds. Not only will this help in retaining nutrients in your beds over winter and prevent your soil from turning very hard, it also gives all the microorganisms a great little food source and ecosystem to feed on over the winter. This will help to keep your beds happy and healthy.
