Central City Learning Garden

The Central City Learning Garden was officially launched on June 14, 2019. Approximately 50 people attended the grand opening event to celebrate the garden, which turned an otherwise asphalt concrete area at Central City into an eco-friendly educational green space. Attendees at the garden’s launch event mingled and enjoyed sweets and treats, while learning about sustainability and garden operations.

The Central City Learning Garden is located on the P3 parking level of Central City behind the SFU Surrey campus in Surrey City Centre. The community-centred learning, social, and event space is operated by Embark Sustainability Society in conjunction with SFU Surrey, SFU Surrey-TD Community Engagement Centre, and Central City.

Gardening participants learn how to grow, eat, and share food grown in the garden. There are currently six 48” x 40” plots in the garden which are being tended to by SFU student groups and departments, Fraser Health staff volunteers, and Embark Sustainability Society volunteers. The plots are expected to be flourishing with a variety of plants and herbs by mid-summer. Learning opportunities for Embark members, SFU students, faculty, and the general public will be provided at the garden throughout the upcoming year via classes, events, and workshops. The garden will help to create dialogue around food production and security in our rapidly urbanizing community.

The new Central City garden location is an expansion on Embark’s successful established learning garden program, which also includes an indoor garden at the SFU Surrey Campus and an outdoor garden at the SFU Burnaby campus.
